Alison established OMCS in 2002 with the merger of AEA Technology’s Materials Characterisation Service (MCS) into the existing commercial activities in Oxford University’s Department of Materials developing not only the business but also quality aspects of the business. OMCS was awarded an IMechE quality mark in 2005 in recognition of business excellence in the field of Micro and Nanotechnology, ISO 9001 in 2010 and ISO 17025 for criminal justice related activities in 2011.
Prior to this Alison held various posts at Harwell within AEA Technology and the Atomic Energy Research Establishment relating to materials characterisation and materials applications such as catalysis and microelectronics. While managing MCS at Harwell Alison was awarded AEA Technology’s Customer Satisfaction Award for outstanding performance working with customers and received a UK Surface Analysis Forum Science in Industry prize for an important contribution to the field of surface science.
Alison has a degree in Chemistry from Liverpool University and a Ph.D. in surface science obtained under the supervision of Professor Sir David King. She is a Chartered Chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and an active member of other learned societies, currently secretary of the IOP Materials and Characterisation Group.
Alison has an established research base in nanotechnology, surface and interface studies with over 100 peer reviewed papers. She has acted as a consultant to EPSRC on mid-range facilities for surface analysis, scanning probe microscopy and forensic science.
Alison has participated in many multinational collaborative research projects and is a currently an Executive Board Member and Work Package Leader in EU collaborative project “NanoFASE” (Nanoparticle Fate and Speciation in the Environment).
